    Frequently asked questions

Where does the 400 mg guideline come from?

The U.S. FDA and EFSA both cite around 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for healthy adults. Pregnant people, teenagers and anyone with a heart condition are usually advised to stay much lower.

How accurate are the per-drink numbers?

They are typical averages. Real caffeine varies with bean, roast, grind, dose and brew time; a long-pulled espresso can hold twice the caffeine of a tight one.

    Does decaf have caffeine?

A little, usually 2–7 mg per cup, which is why it is listed here.

    Is this medical advice?

No. It is a planning tool. If you have questions about caffeine and your health, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
